Learning the science behind crime scene investigation at Sligo Institute of Technology.

Students at Sligo IT are the first to be awarded Bachelor of Science degrees in Forensic Investigation and Analysis.

It may not have the same ring to it as CSI Miami but you could call this CSI Sligo.

Students learn about testing for gunshot residue, ballistics, fingerprinting and other skills needed to become crime scene investigators.

Third year student Sarah Faherty from Killybegs, County Donegal is hoping to carry on to do an honours degree next year and plans to do a master's degree in mass disaster analysis at Edinburgh University.

Fellow student Oisín Crawford from Leitrim hopes to continue his studies by completing a master's degree in New York which includes an internship at the FBI crime laboratory. Although a fan of the CSI television shows, he says studying forensics is not as glamorous.

Dr Fiona MacArdle of the School of Science at Sligo IT emphasises that the course is a science course and is not like the CSI television depictions.
