An unexpected birthday tribute on The Late Late Show for comedian and entertainer Hal Roach.

Hal Roach is brought into the studio by presenter Gay Byrne assuming that he is to do a quick comedy routine. Much to his surprise, the panel and audience are there to pay tribute to Hal Roach for his contribution to the entertainment industry in Ireland.

As he enters the studio a rendition of 'Hello Dolly' is sung by Dickie Rock and the audience with the lyrics adapted to pay tribute.

Joking on those in attendance, Hal Roach quips,

Well, what a surprise. I owe everybody here money.

Paying tribute to the comedian, three weeks after his birthday, Gay Byrne says,

Well done son and thank you for a great innings in show business.

This episode of The Late Late Show was broadcast on 26 November 1983. The presenter is Gay Byrne.
