Jessica Chastain, Julianne Moore, and our own Sínead Burke were among the famous faces walking the red carpet of the CNMI Sustainable Fashion Awards 2023 during the Milan Fashion Week Womenswear Spring/Summer 2024.

Hosted in the city's Teatro alla Scala, this year's ceremony was divided into 10 categories, celebrating those in the fashion industry who have set ambitious targets or taken notable action in terms of circular innovation.

The star-studded ceremony celebrated a number of fashion houses and industry figures, with the winners chosen by Andrew Morlet, chair of the panel and CEO of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation; Carlo Capasa, chairman of the CNMI; Simone Cipriani, head and founder of the Ethical Fashion Initiative; and Federica Marchionni, CEO of the Global Fashion Agenda.

Notable winners on the night included Edward Enninful, the editor-in-chief of British Vogue, who received the Visionary Award, while The Biodiversity and Water Award went to Kering.

The Ellen MacArthur Foundation Award for Circular Economy, which recognises those leading the way in applying circular economy principles to their work, was given to Gucci for their "commitment to transforming its productive model to enhance a more responsible and circular luxury for the future".

According to the CNMI, Gucci's 'Denim Project’ set a high bar for incorporating regeneratively-grown cotton in its denim collections thanks to their partnership Regenagri-certified Algosur farm in Spain.

Speaking on the win, Andrew Morlet, CEO Ellen MacArthur Foundation, said: "In the world of fashion, our vision of a circular economy is one where products are used more, are made to be made again, and are produced from safe and recycled or renewable inputs.

"We're delighted to see top players in the global fashion industry – winner Gucci and finalists Chloé and ACS Clothing – embrace these circular economy principles in their products and through redesigning entire business models.

"Transforming the fashion system won’t happen overnight. But collaboration across the industry from the design of future products to the processes, services, supply chains and business models that will deliver them and keep them in use, gives us hope that a circular economy for fashion can become the norm."
