We've seen many stars make an unexpected turn toward modelling in recent years, from Jeff Goldblum and Kyle MacLachlan walking the catwalk for Prada, to Steve Buschemi starring in a Kith campaign.

None, however, are potentially as surprising as Adidas's newest model.

Football legend and Cork native Roy Keane has been revealed as the star of the sporting company's latest SPEZIAL collection campaign, sharing the limelight with his pet dog Jet.

The former professional player and coach, and current sports pundit, appears in the brand's latest advert, speaking earnestly about the reality of retiring from professional football after such a stellar career and why he feels there is plenty of "contentment" in his life.

"I played to win from when I was eight, nine years old," Keane says. "You were literally on the biggest rollercoaster of your life."

He continues, saying that the highs of that lifestyle were the highest, and suggests the lows were incredibly low. "But sometimes you have to lose to win."

He adds: "The biggest challenge for every sportsperson is actually when your career finishes. You almost know you're never going to reach those highs again. But you have to accept that I'll never get the buzz I'll ever get from anything else in my life from what happened on the football pitch.

"Being in the dressing room and winning stuff with good players and teammates. Oh honestly, it really is amazing."

Finally, he reflects on his life since leaving professional football, saying: "Life's been pretty good to me in terms of my career and family. I actually have a lot of contentment in my life. That can go sometimes but generally speaking... yeah, I'm pretty contented."

Adidas's SPEZIAL collections are designed by Gary Apden and sell out almost instantly online, thanks to its loyal following that have frothed over every release since its first 10 years ago. We're expecting this collection to be no different.

Each collection includes both footwear and apparel, both of which draws inspiration from the sportswear label's archives. This year's drop features seven footwear styles and a number of clothing items, all of which are designed in earthy tones and many of which Keane models in the advert.

Football fans were astounded by Keane's turn to modelling, with one commenter on the Instagram announcement saying, "Never in my life did I expect to see Roy Keane as a model for fashion".

The collection is released on 16 November.
