The CIPD in Ireland is calling on employers to be supportive of workers facing potential disruption this morning and later in the day as a result of Storm Debi and its associated conditions.

For locations under red and orange weather warnings, the HR group said that employees should be facilitated to stay at home unless travel is urgent and work onsite is essential.

"For those who can work from home, this is the best option," the Director of CIPD in Ireland, Mary Connaughton, said.

She said that for those with childcare responsibilities, delayed school and creche opening times will also impact on their ability to keep to their usual travel and work times.

"Situations such as this require an understanding from employers that workers should not put themselves at risk in extreme weather," Ms Connaughton stated.

"Flexible working or annual leave, or arrangements to facilitate the rescheduling of any hours missed are all potential ways to make up any shortfall," she added.
