Pogues star Shane MacGowan has been discharged from hospital after a stay lasting months, according to the singer's wife.

Mr MacGowan had been receiving care in St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin for an infection.

This evening, his wife Victoria Mary Clarke posted a picture of Mr MacGowan in a hospital bed and wrote: "Shane got out of the hospital!

"We are deeply and eternally grateful to all of the doctors and nurses and staff at St Vincent's it's the best!

"And special thanks to Tom Creagh and Brian Corscadden for your help."

On Sunday, Ms Clarke posted a picture of Mr MacGowan with Imelda May, saying he was "so happy" to see the Dublin singer when she visited him at the hospital.

Earlier this month, Ms Clarke revealed her hopes of Mr MacGowan returning home for the festive season.

In a post to fans last week, she said: "Shane is feeling much better today! I am so grateful to everyone who is willing him to get home for the Christmas!"

Mr MacGowan, who turns 66 on Christmas Day, is now permanently confined to a wheelchair after he fell and broke his pelvis in 2015 and then broke his knee and tore his ligaments in 2020.
