Paul Mescal has said that both of his parents had a different experience at the Oscars last Spring when he was nominated for Best Actor for his performance in Aftersun.

Speaking to late-night TV host Jimmy Kimmel in the US, the Normal People star said that his mother Dearbhla bonded with the seat-filler who took the actor's place during breaks, while his father Paul Snr claimed he danced with Cher at the after-party.

The Kildare native said: "Mum sat beside me, while dad was up in 'the nosebleeds' (seats on a higher level) and dad was mostly there for the parties."

"That was his main event that weekend," he joked.

The Maynooth man continued: "He got to dance, as he said, with Cher. He was in the vicinity of Cher, dancing - and my dad says with him! Cher was definitely not dancing with my dad! He had a great time. I am correcting him here on television: he did not dance with Cher!

"The thing I learned about the Oscars is that they have this thing called seat-fillers, so if you need to go to the bathroom - or as I discovered you can go to the bar during the Oscars. I went to the bathroom and the bar.

"When you leave your seat, these brilliant seat-fillers run in. My mum became good friends with the seat-filler. I spent half an hour-40 minutes away from the seat."

"This is the night you come home with the morning traffic"

When asked what time he got 'home' after the Oscars, Mescal replied: "I came back with the morning traffic, for real, at 9am."

"There is [sic] few nights that I reserve for that. I was proud. This is the night you come home with the morning traffic," he added.

Mescal will next be seen on cinema screens opposite fellow Irish actor Andrew Scott in All of Us Strangers, opening on Friday 26 January 2024.
