The creator and writer of the multi-award winning comedy series Derry Girls has been passing on advice and tips to the next generation of storytellers and film makers.

Earlier this week the final series of the show won the International Emmy for Comedy.

It is a show that catapulted its cast to stardom, and cast Derry in a bright new light as part of the entertainment tourist map.

The mural of the cast draws thousands of visitors for photographs, there is a permanent Derry Girls Exhibition, Derry Girls tours and a range of memorabilia.

This week the show took its creator to New York to pick up the latest in a series of awards.

Lisa McGee was back down to earth today, and giving a masterclass to 25 young leaders at Ulster University in Belfast, and still buzzing about winning an International Emmy.

"We were so thrilled, we really weren't expecting to win," she told RTÉ News.

"It was just lovely to have the whole team there you know in New York and be able to go to the ceremony together and it was just a wonderful end to the whole Derry Girls journey."

Her talks was part of the university's 25@25 leadership programme.

Ms McGee said she wants to help inspire the next generation of creative talents, and especially young women.

"It's very important and for me particularly for writers. We will lose those female voices if we don't encourage and inspire people."

One of those in the audience was Co Down commercials director Katie McQuillan.

"It's wonderful to hear from someone as successful as Lisa," she said.

"When I started out there many female wasn't many female role models so now that we're starting to get females who've really been there, done that, and done amazing things like win Emmy's it's a huge deal, it sort of gives us a vision to work towards.

"At the start I was often in rooms surrounded by men so its great to have more and more successful women in the industry."

The Derry Girls creator has written a new eight part comedy thriller, 'How to Get to Heaven from Belfast', to be broadcast on Channel 4.
