There was a slight increase recorded in the number of new homes that building work began on in October.

The number of commencement notices lodged with authorities was 2,624, up 17 on the previous month.

This compares to 1,841 notices submitted in October last year, a 43% rise.

It brings to 26,547 the number of new homes and apartments that construction has started on since the beginning of the year.

That compares to 22,760 in the first ten months of 2022.

It means that if last year's performances in November and December are repeated or surpassed, the number of new homes commenced in 2023 should exceed 30,000.

The largest number of commencement notices lodged in the month was in South Dublin County local authority area, where 476 were submitted, followed by 315 in Dublin City.

The lowest number, at 2, was in Sligo.
